SUMMARY: CFP: Gender and Religious Agency in the Muslim World
DESCRIPTION: Call for PapersGender and Religious Agency in the Muslim WorldSummer 2024Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin, Germany Conference Description:We are inviting proposals for the conference Gender and Religious Agency in the Muslim World, to be held in summer 2024 (exact date to be determined) at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient Berlin, Germany. The conference explores the intersection of gender with religious agency in the broadest sense, including religious authority, knowledge production, practice, performance, and community formation and representation, both from a historical as well as a contemporary perspective. We take religion as a practice and category of thought seriously and ask how members of various religious communities negotiate gender in public and personal settings from a believer’s perspective. We ask how they have engaged with topics such as gender roles, sexuality, morality, family, patriarchal structures and so on within their respective geographical and cultural contexts. How have they intervened in both religious and political debates, and what role does media play, including social media? How have they negotiated gender when interpreting theology, religious history, and religious practice? What role does mobility play, including religious mobility (i.e. conversion)? While the conference focuses broadly on the Muslim world, it also explicitly invites contributions that explore the experience of members from religious minorities, including, but not limited to, Christians, Hindus, Jews, and practitioners of so-called “traditional religions”. All disciplinary backgrounds and regional foci are welcome.Submission Guidelines:Interested participants should submit a 200-word abstract including a title to Maria-Magdalena Pruss at maria-magdalena.pruss@zmo.de by 31stOctober 2023. Please highlight the role that “religious agency” plays in your proposed paper/presentation. Participants will be notified of acceptance by 30 November 2023. We expect to be able to cover accommodation for all participants, and we have a limited amount for travel costs, especially for those without institutional support. The exact timing of the conference will be determined the approval of conference funding. Please send your abstract to maria-magdalena.pruss@zmo.de by 31stOctober, 2023.
